Before Lady Gaga there was Björk. Björk is a music icon who has also dressed in avant-garde outfits bordering on the absurd. She has been constantly challenging the boundaries of music and fashion for a uniquely beautiful display of creativity. Here are three of her favorite choices in fashion.
Bright Neon Colors
Björk is a huge fan of bright vibrant neon colors. Everything from hot pinks, neon greens and yellows Björk wears every color imaginable. Her bright clothes are also far from standard cuts dawning a fluffy multi colored ball hat and a knit clown type dress Björk pushes the envelope in color and cut. Furthermore, not only does she wear clothes with these bright hues but her make-up more often than not matches her wardrobe palette. She has had half of her face completely painted in bright neon colors.
Metallic
She has combined gold, silver, and bronze for a variety of textures and shapes. One of my favorite pieces iconic is made of bronze with scales on her arms and legs. It makes Björk appear to be some sort of futuristic yet mythical space fish robot. While some may find the outfit to be absurd it cannot be viewed as simply fashion. For the outfit transcends what is wearable for the everyday and is a piece of art in itself.
Feathers
One of the most iconic pieces ever worn to the Oscar’s was Björk’s swan dress. To some the dress was a symbol of elegance and beauty to others it just seemed ludicrous. But, whatever you felt about the dress it made a statement because it is now a part of pop culture history. The dress did not feature an actual feather but it did have a swan head on it which is why it was included in this category. Björk has also worn actual feathers in performances using them as gorgeous hair pieces.
Many may see musical artists like Björk and Lady Gaga’s style as a way to shock and gain attention from people and that it distracts from their music. But personally I see it as artistic expression and an extension of their music to the visual spectrum. What do you think?
