In 2001 I stumbled upon an album titled “The Photo Album” by a relatively unknown four piece Seattle based indie rock band known as Death Cab for Cutie. From that day forth they became a personal favorite. As the years went by they grew as musicians and put out albums with varied styles ranging from the symphonic, ethereal “Transatlanticism”. To the poppy and soulful “Plans” and “Narrow Stairs”.
Death Cab for Cutie returns with their 7th full length album “Codes & Keys” on May 31st.
All biases aside, Codes & Keys is easily one of 2011’s best albums to date. Providing a vast spectrum of music from the melodic, masterfully written first single “You Are a Tourist” to the mostly instrumental, dreamlike “Unobstructed Views”. This album truly reflects their maturation as musicians at the top of their game. Lovers of piano driven albums will be pleased to know the most standout musical component of this album is the heavy use of sustain pedal.
Codes & Keys was written about significant change in lives of the Members of DCFC. One being a major change in frontman Ben Gibbard’s marriage to musician/actress Zooey Deschanel which is expressed in the song titled “Stay Young, Go Dancing”.
Yet another testament to precision of Chris Walla’s musical architecture, Ben Gibbard’s beautiful melodies and lyrics, Nick Harmer’s rhythmic baselines, and Jason McGerr’s complex drum beats and fills. A complex, soulful masterpiece that I highly recommend to music lovers.
Buy it in stores or on Itunes May 31st, 2011.
