Exclusive Look: IMATS 2011

Niche attended the International Makeup Artist Trade Show at the Pasadena Convention Center on Sunday June 26, 2011.

The Event

By far the biggest makeup exhibition in the world, the IMATS featured a wide variety of vendors and displays, including MAC Pro, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Ben Nye, Inglot, Make Up For Ever, Naimie’s Beauty, Stila, and Nyx. Virtually all mainstream makeup brands could be found somewhere in the convention, at wonderfully discounted prices. As usual, the event sold out this year and was limited to professional makeup artists, press, and those lucky enough to purchase their passes early.

The IMATS also offered many classes and seminars in various makeup techniques and effects. One of the most attended classes was on body painting, taught by the award-winning Yolanda Bartram. The hands-on class featured general body painting dos and dont’s, product knowledge regarding cosmetics and tools for body painting, inspiration techniques, blending and brush tricks, and integrating prosthetics into body art designs.

Another featured master class was with Napoleon Perdis, the Elle Magazine visionary on how to integrate beauty, fashion, and runway makeup for artists wanting to take their careers to new heights.Other seminars included panel discussions, runway and fashion makeup trends, autumn/winter runway trends, makeup techniques for women of color, beauty for close-up print work, camouflaging tattoos, red carpet makeup, eyebrow techniques, airbrushing and contouring.

The True Blood makeup panel certainly generated the most hype. You can read Niche’s coverage of the panel as well as a sneak peek into the new season here.

The Haul

Niche writers Tiara Chiaramonte, Sonya Barrett, and Emily Wells took the IMATS by a storm and walked away with some incredible bargains. For approximately $275, they acquired a deluxe brush set, several professional eyeshadows from Ben Nye and MAC Pro, MAC Pro eyeliner, 3 pairs of professional false eyelashes, Ben Nye blush, lip, and foundation palettes, and eyeshadow primers from Too Faced and Nyx.
