New Band Alert: Gardens and Villa

I find that often the most interesting music is that which transcends belonging to a particular genre, so I was incredibly pleased to discover Gardens and Villa. Their sound isn’t exactly one of a kind, but it manages to fit the small niche of artists that fuse together many styles for an unusual blend.

It’s also quite refreshing to see a band “make it” when they originate from humble roots. The boys of Gardens and Villa met while attending college in Santa Barbara, and named the group after the street on which they lived.

Gardens and Villa signed to Secretly Canadian to release its self-titled debut full-length in July 2011, and is now touring the United States. They also released limited edition singles in 2010 from the then-upcoming album.

Chris Lynch, Adam Rasmussen, Levi Hayden, Shane McKillop and Dusty Ineman recorded their debut album in Oregon. It’s a crafty mix of catchy synthesized pop blended with retro Brit rock- think unexpected sounds, like wooden flutes, pounding drums, and faraway beats. Their carefree and intoxicating style has brought comparisons to Animal Collective and Foster the People, who they happen to be touring with.

Featuring singles “Black Hills” and “Orange Blossom,” Gardens And Villa will be released July 5. You can hear them now on the group’s Myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/gardensandvilla
