The final night of LA Fashion Weekend at at Sunset Gower Studios was a spectacular finish to a week of celebrating upcoming fall trends.

The night featured fashion designers Tal Sheyn who worked to create a fashion line based off of Alexis from the Real House Wives of Orange County, Romeo and Juliet Couture’s Gossip Girl inspired line, and Lizzie Parker’s creations. Each designer had a personalized take for upcoming fall fashion.

Tal Sheyn showcased a very glamorous collection filled with sequins and sheer cutouts. Romeo and Juliet Couture was New York Gossip Girl staple fall fashion sensibilities with a West Coast flair.

While Lizzie Parker’s collection was stylish yet understated sportswear you could feel fabulous wearing at work. It was a star studded event with celebrities like the first supermodel, Janice Dickinson attending the show.

Dresses were all red at Style Fashion Week LA in downtown Los Angeles Friday night in conjunction with the American Heart Association to raise awareness and support the fight against heart disease in women.

The “Go Red for Women Celebrity Red Dress Fashion Show”, co-hosted by Taylor Armstrong from “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” attracted hundreds of people, including Katlin Mastandrea from “The Middle” and “Anger Management,” Meagan Tandy, Miss California 2007.

Katlin Mastandrea, playing Olivia who is a close friend of Charlie Sheen’s 13-year-old daughter Emma in “Anger Management,” thinks beauty and fashion is something that tells who you are. Speaking of Charlie sheen, she said he is interacting with everyone behind the scene, and he is very professional.

Tandy was born with a heart murmur, and she thinks it’s good to have programs for people who are suffering from the heart disease.

“It’s just great to come out and support causes like this,” Tandy said. When Tandy talks about her show “Jane By Design,” an ABC family show, she said her character has to wear a lot of miniskirts, but with her long legs, those skirts can barely cover her butt half the time.

Tracy Broughton, Ms. America 2011, came with a 35,000 dollars crown on her head and a glittery cane. Before the beauty pageant, she had multiple car accident that left her on a wheelchair for 11 years. She had her first car accident in 1991that her car flipped of a mountainside.

She sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to ICU. Her doctor said she could never walk again. In 1996, her second car accident left her hemiplegic, paralyzed on the left side of her body.

“That one left me no memory, no speech. I winded up at a therapy three times a day,” Broughton said.

But in 2005, Broughton stood up for the first time, and started her modeling career. She never gives up and won her crown of Ms. America in 2011.

Broughton said winning the beauty pageant is phenomenal, “who doesn’t want a crown? People ask if I sleep with it, sometimes I said.” She wants to be an example for people who want to make a difference. She thinks beauty is inside and out, and what you are when everything is gone.

“People think it’s just about the beauty, but it’s not,” Broughton said.

It’s hard to get enough of fashion magazines. They are affordable, easy to consume and it’s lovely to receive them in the mail each month. They offer straightforward inspiration and often insightful articles. But for some, magazines will never be enough. Magazines simply cannot compete with the insight provided by a book. And yet, the fashion books on the market seem to be consistently overshadowed by magazines. For those who crave them, here are some of my favorite fashion biographies.

“The Gospel According to Coco Chanel” by Karen Carbo: While there are countless biographies of the timeless icon Coco Chanel, this book takes a different approach than the vast majority of them. It gives a brief life history, with the main focus of the book being the application of Chanel’s life philosophies in modern times. The book features easy to digest quotations, and is quite witty and entertaining.

“Front Row Anna Wintour: The Cool Life and Hot Times of Vogue’s Editor in Chief” by Jerry Oppenheimer: After having her public image quite skewed after the 2003 novel “The Devil Wears Prada,” written by a disgruntled ex-assistant, Jerry Oppenheimer provides a more objective look at Anna Wintour. The editor-in-chief of Vogue, referred to by many as “The Queen,” is one of the most controversial figures in fashion as a result of her cutthroat approach to running the magazine, and Oppenheimer makes no excuses for her. He combs her past, interviewing old school friends and anyone who might possibly have a grain of “dirt” on Wintour. However, he does also acknowledge her accomplishments as arguably the most successful editor in fashion history, and attempts to show a deep person behind her public cattiness.

“D.V.” by Diana Vreeland: Written by the outlandish Diana Vreeland herself, this autobiography captures Vreeland’s work as fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar and editor-in-chief of American Vogue. Vreeland has an uninhibited passion for the industry and writes about it in a charming, if not far-fetched manner. She recalls she and her younger sister being the last ones to see The Mona Lisa before it was stolen from the Louvre in 1911, curing Jack Nicholson’s back pain and watching Charles Lindbergh fly over her house during his infamous trip. While certainly not entirely accurate, the book is a fantastic read for any fashion lover.

“Annie Liebovitz: A Photographer’s Life”: Alright, this is one that has very little to do with fashion. But Liebovitz has photographed some of the most famous names in the fashion industry, and works nearly every month with the top publications. This book highlights some of her most profound work from 1990-2005, including photographs of Johnny Cash, Nicole Kidman, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Keith Richards, Michael Jordan, Joan Didion, R2-D2, Patti Smith, Nelson Mandela, Jack Nicholson, William Burroughs and George W. Bush.

Niche attended the opening night of Style Fashion Week LA’s Fall/Winter 2012 collections at the Vibiana on March 12. The beautiful venue is a cathedral turned runway and is used for a variety of events.

The first anticipated collection was Alicia Estrada’s “Stop Staring!” The vintage inspired line features mainly retro silhouettes, inspired by the fashions of the 1940s and 1950s.

Alicia says that the dresses from the show are particularly inspired by the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, known in Spanish as the “Epoca de Oro.”

“Stop Staring!” is an easy to wear line, making it a celebrity favorite. “Real Housewife of Orange County” Gretchen Rossi walked the red carpet wearing a classic form-fitting black dress from the line.

She said “I love the line! I mean, look at the dress, it fits perfect. It’s a little bit sophisticated, a little bit sexy, it has a retro flair to it, which I absolutely love.” Rossi personalized her basic dress with a belt and eye-catching red shoes.

Angel McCord, sister of 90210’s Annalynne McCord and co-designer of their line The Sisters 3, says that she loves the line as well.

“I think the retro look is here to stay. That’s the great thing about living in this day and age- we can fly anywhere we want, wear anything we want, and be anything we want.”

Next, Niche talked to Tinsel Korey, who plays Emily in the hit “Twilight” series. While she couldn’t give us any hints about the upcoming movie, she was eager to discuss why she loves the “Stop Staring!” line.

She told us, “I’m a big fan of the 40’s and 50’s feel, and I like that they’re affordable! I think that since Marilyn Monroe has popped back up the retro look is coming back.”

While all the dresses in the collection are quite wearable and classic, the last dress shown by Estrada was the read showstopper- a glitzy, sequined, floor-length gold gown.

The designer came out to greet the audience, accompanied by the model of the dress. It was clear that this was the design that Estrada was most proud of.

Next was Ina Soltani’s line, filled with glamour, drama and mystique.

The collection featured an array of wearable evening gowns and cocktail dresses in a variety of colors and textures. Soltani has demonstrated true versatility as a designer with this line.

Designers like Estrada and Soltani are out to prove that Los Angeles Fashion Week can hold it’s own against New York and Europe.

Gretchen Rossi said it best- “I think we have some really talented designers here! Sometimes I think we get a bad rap, but I think we are hopefully catching up here.”

Style Fashion Week kicked off Los Angeles’ Fashion week with an elegant VIP opening party benefiting Hollywood Arts.

The party was held at a beautiful Beverly Hills estate decorated in a modern, but sophisticated style with gorgeous view of Los Angeles.

It was a mixer of some of Los Angeles’ most elite business men, top models and upcoming stars.

The party featured art from Herb Ritts, Alan Aldridge and Niki Sabet ranging from statues of laced ballet boots to surrealistic cartoon paintings.

The highlight of the party was the delicious food creations by French Master Chef Philippe Forcioli of Cipriani.

Each piece of food was light and fresh but filled with flavor. The menu ranged from risotto squares with bread crumbs to juicy herb roasted chicken to roast beef slices on a baguette.

Niche briefly talked to one of the Hunger Games actresses, Tara Macken, who plays the tribute from District 4.

Macken said told us about some behind the scenes stories while shooting.

“Well a bear came to set once,” said Macken. ”Literally there was a huge bear and we all had to hide in our trailers. It was probably the height of our excitement while filming.”

She remarked aside of the bear visit, acting in the Hunger Games was more like summer camp than work because of all the amazing people that were involved.

The Hunger Games actress will be walking the runway this Friday for the Red Dress event. So stay tuned for coverage of upcoming fashion week events with Niche.
